Protecting Young Drivers Through Science and Prevention

UC Irvine to study reducing alcohol-influenced crash injuries

UC Irvine emergency medicine expert Dr. Federico Vaca has received a National Institutes of Health grant to study an age-based risk assessment approach aimed at reducing alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes among young drivers. Funded by the NIH’s National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the research addresses a growing public safety concern, as alcohol-impaired driving deaths have risen significantly over the past decade. Young adults ages 21 to 24 are the most at risk. Dr. Vaca’s work builds on more than 20 years of injury prevention research focused on motor vehicle crashes, youth health disparities, and alcohol-related behaviors.

Pediatric Exercise and Genomics Research Center (PERC) at UCI

The Pediatric Exercise and Genomics Research Center (PERC) at UCI focuses on community outreach, education, research, and student projects to promote pediatric health. Through health fairs, virtual programs, and partnerships, PERC educates families on sugar consumption, nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention. The center also conducts research on health literacy while engaging students in educational initiatives that support community wellbeing.
