Air Monitoring – Volunteers Needed
Wednesday, June 28, 2023 @ 7:00 am - 7:30 pm
As part of GREEN-MPNA’s ongoing work to advance environmental justice and public health in Santa Ana, we look forward to our upcoming Air Monitoring Day, where we collect air pollution data throughout the city on Wednesday, April 19th! If you’ve joined this effort before, we hope you’ll join us again. If you’ve been meaning to participate but haven’t yet been able to, now is your chance! This resident-led community air monitoring project is sampling air quality in southeast Santa Ana and throughout the city to help us understand the disproportionate impact of pollution on primarily low-income communities and people of color. With your help, we can gather the data we need to better advocate for change. We need your help — Please join us!
Volunteer: We’ll be using small, portable air sensors (they fit on a keychain) to gather data about particulate matter (PM) in the industrial corridor that runs adjacent to our homes, schools, and neighborhoods in southeast Santa Ana. Volunteers will take these sensors along designated routes during three shifts: 7-10 AM, 12-3 PM, and 4-7 PM. These shifts will be approximately 1-2 hours long, and you may sign up for one or more shifts. Please use this signup link to register to attend the air monitoring event: https://forms.gle/xLMY4Ki7yacimSGHA
Requirements: Ideally, volunteers should have a WiFi-enabled smartphone (iOs) to download the app that connects to the sensor, but it is unnecessary. We especially need volunteers who can drive their own cars, though participation on foot and by bicycle is also welcomed. You don’t need any prior experience.
Sign up: If you’d like to participate in this project, we invite you to sign up for one (or more!) ~1 to 2-hour volunteer shifts. By participating in this volunteer opportunity, you’ll help us advance two of our main study aims: (1) to characterize air pollution in the industrial corridor, including identifying hot spots and emissions sources; and (2) to characterize differences in air pollution between socially vulnerable and less vulnerable communities to highlight potential environmental justice issues in our city.
Helping recruit volunteers: If you can’t participate but would still like to help, forward the attached fliers to your students and colleagues interested in volunteering, or help us by sharing this opportunity on social media.
This project has been in development for nearly five years and is the first community air monitoring project in Orange County. This project is funded by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and designed in partnership between GREEN-MPNA and UC Irvine. It is overseen by Comunidad Unida, Aire Limpio (CUAL), a steering committee of residents of Southeast Santa Ana. Thank you for your ongoing support of this project, and we hope to see you on Wednesday, April 19th!
We had an excellent turnout for the April event and hope to have a similar turnout for this coming event. If you have any questions regarding the event, please don’t hesitate to contact us at communtyorganizer@mpnagreen. org or 657-210-1009. We look forward to seeing you all on the 28th!
Thank you,
