UCI scientists study pollutants coming from motor vehicle brakes

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine are studying a lesser-known source of air pollution: tiny particles released when motor vehicle brakes wear down during braking. While regulations have reduced pollution from tailpipe emissions, scientists say non-exhaust sources like brake wear are becoming a larger share of harmful particulate matter in urban environments. These particles can contain metals and other materials that may affect air quality and public health.
The research is part of broader efforts to understand how traffic-related pollution affects communities in Orange County. Community groups such as Green-MPNA (Madison Park Neighborhood Association) have been engaged in conversations about local air quality, helping raise awareness about pollution sources and supporting collaborations between researchers and residents to better understand environmental health risks.
